P. K. Subban had spent his junior career with the Belleville Bulls (2005-2006 to 2008-09) in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). While playing for them, he had been drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the off-season at the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

In the 2007–08 season, he had helped the Belleville Bulls reach the J. Ross Robertson Cup Finals. He had taken the team to the semi-final the following season, his last with the team. He had been named in the ‘OHL First All-Star Team’ in 2009.

Before starting his NHL journey playing just 2 games for the Montreal Canadiens in 2009-10, he had spent the vast majority of the season representing the Hamilton Bulldogs in the American Hockey League (AHL), the primary developmental league for the NHL.
